Have you ever calculated whether it is more cost effective to travel by car or by RV?
Recently, we took a 7000 mile (7 week) trip in our Mobile Suite and I kept records on food costs, fuel and park costs.
A good percentage of our trip was visiting distant family. We were unable to give them much advance notice of our arrival so we ate a lot of meals out and entertained them for a meal or two.
Fuel costs averaged about $ 2.69 per gallon. Our truck normally averages 12 to 14 miles per gallon without a load so with pulling the DoubleTree, I reduced the average mileage to 7 miles per gallon.
Lodging costs were between $20.00 and $35.00 per night. State and National parks are less expensive and we did a few nights of dry camping. Woodalls and Trailer Life are a great reference for finding parks and we never had any trouble finding one except for Modesto, California.
Total cost for the trip averaged about $83.00 a day for two people.
We have traveled by car and stayed in motels. The average cost for us is usually about $80.00 per night. Even at that price, motels are not always clean and the beds not always comfortable. We’ve found cheaper rooms once in a while that were acceptable but that is an uncommon experience.
Because of this trip, I have come to this conclusion. Why do I want a different bed every night when I don't even know when the blankets were last washed or drink out of motel cups that just gets wiped out in the room? Why do I want to pack in a cooler and bag for cold drinks and snacks, have clothes with wrinkles, look for a restaurant, ugly coffee and only TV for entertainment. RVing offers the same bed everynight, convenient food and drinks, wrinkle free clothing and your favorite entertainment wherever you are, plus a bathroom whenever you need one.
Our Mobile Suite got a lot of attention and helped us meet new friends, explain how well it is built and show it.s beauty inside and out.
